What are Acne Scars?
Acne scarring can affect any skin type and is typically the outcome of inflamed blemishes caused by skin pores filled with dead skin cells, bacteria and excess oils. The inflamed pore starts to swell, causing a break in the follicle wall. Depending on the layers of the skin, the severity of the lesions will largely depend on the size of the rapture. The more serious lesions arise when there is a deep break in the follicle wall. Your body tries to repair these lesions by forming new collagen fibres, however, they are usually not as smooth as the original skin.
What Are the Different Types of Acne Scars?
There are two types of acne scars that someone may have: hypertrophic scarring and atrophic scarring. Hypertrophic scars occur when the body stimulates too much collagen when acne wounds are healing which results in a mass of raised scars on each of the surfaces of the skin. In contrast, atrophic scarring is presented in two alternative ways. “Icepick” scars are typically smaller, yet noticeable holes in the skin. “Boxcar” scars are typically round or oval shapes that are depressed in the skin.
How Can We Treat Acne Scars?
