What is Hyperpigmentation?
Hyperpigmentation is a common, usually harmless skin condition that affects people of all skin types. Hyperpigmentation occurs when your skin cells produce more melanin, which causes dark spots on specific parts on your skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour, forms deposits in the skin. Some forms of hyperpigmentation like melasma and sunspots are more likely to affect the area of the skin that faces more sun exposure and UV radiation such as the face, arms and legs.
What Are the Causes of Hyperpigmentation?
The term hyperpigmentation is a term that is used to describe areas on uneven pigmentation in the skin. The types of hyperpigmentation include age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The most common causes of hyperpigmentation are sun exposure, skin inflammation and Melasma.
Your body produces more melanin to protect the skin from UV rays from the sun thus causing dark spots on the skin either called sunspots or age spots. Skin inflammation causes hyperpigmentation as areas of the skin can darken after experiencing inflammation. The last cause is Melasma which is most common is a result of pregnancy when people experience hormonal changes that result in darker patches of skin.
