Sun Damage

What is Sun Damage?

Sun damage occurs when your body is exposed to the sun’s UV rays without any form of protection. The sun’s rays extract a chemical in the body associated with melanin, which darkens your skin as an effort to protect. Sun exposure displays itself throughout time through age spots that are characterized by flat, black or greyish brown spots that vary in the different sizes displayed in the face, hand, shoulders, chest, back and arm.

Sun Damage can also impact the collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen is a protein that retains the firmness in the skin and elastin is the support fibre that allows the skin to bounce back. As the sun starts to penetrate the deeper skin layers, it decreases collagen and elastin production which results in skin aging.

How is Sun Damage Caused?

There are two different types of UV rays that are projected by sunlight. The first, UVA, which are longer-waves which activate skin in an unhealthy way in order to become tan. However, they are not the reason for sunburns. Rather, UVA rays go far deeper into the skin, therefore trigger skin-cancer and premature signs of aging.
Alternatively, UVB rays, penetrate the body through a shorter-wave and are responsible for causing sunburn and also premature aging. Thus, UVB is considered the common cause of most skin cancers.
