What are Makeup Sensitivities?
Makeup sensitivities, just like any other sensitivity, occur when your immune system reacts to a foreign substance that doesn’t cause a reaction in most people. Your body produces a substance called antibodies and when you have a sensitivity or allergy, your immune system makes antibodies that identify a particular allergen as harmful, even if it’s not.
Irritant Contact Dermatitis vs. Allergic Contact Dermatitis
There are two types of skin reactions classified as cosmetic sensitivities or allergies: irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis.
- Irritant Contact Dermatitis: this allergy occurs when something damages your skin. For example, your skin might burn and itch where you used the product and can result in blisters from the burn.
- Allergic Contact Dermatitis: this form of allergy affects your immune system and can be portrayed in redness and hives that will leave your skin red, itchy and raw. This can happen anywhere in your body, but typically it will be where you placed the product.
How to Avoid a Reaction to Makeup
Makeup sensitivities can range from rashes to life-threatening risks. Symptoms can start right after you try something new or can develop over-time. This is why it’s important to patch test beauty products on your arm before buying new beauty products to identify how your skin reacts. If you have redness, swelling, or burning, don’t use the product.
It is also crucial to read the ingredients list before purchasing the product as well because you might have an allergy to an ingredient that is used. We recommend applying fragrance to your clothes instead of your skin. This way it reduces the risk of having a skin allergy to the perfume interacting with other products and ingredients you have on your body.
