What are Large Pores?
Pores are small openings in your skin that release oil and sweat. The layer beneath your epidermis, the dermis, contains hair follicles, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands. The canals of these gland ducts open into hair follicles that we call pores. There are two types of pores on the body: oil pores and sweat pores. Oil pores release sebum, the body’s natural oil, while the sweat pores release sweat. Over time, the oil-releasing pores may become enlarged and filled with debris from our environment.
What Do They Look Like?
Even though every person’s skin type is different, we all have tiny hairs throughout our bodies that grow from their own dedicated hair follicle. Each follicle has a pore at the base of it and contains a gland that produces the body’s natural oils. The gland (sebaceous gland) produces oil to help lubricate, waterproof, and protect the skin and hair. This oil rises to the top of the skin and collects in the pore, causing your pores to become more visible. They are unique to the individual depending on skin type and environmental conditions.
When Do Pores Become Enlarged?
The primary causes of enlarged pores are excessive sebum, decreased elasticity around the pore, and increased hair follicle volume. Depending on whether your skin is dry or oily skin, this will determine how large your pores can become. Clogged pores occur when oil collects in the pores in combination with dirt. There is no permanent solution to get rid of large pores, nor would you want to as they’re how oil and sweat reach your skin’s surface, however, there are ways to reduce your pore size.
How to Unclog Your Pores
Chemical peels use different forms of prescription strength acids such as salicylic, lactic and retinol acid to help remove the outer layers of dead skin, which reveals the fresher, healthier, softer skin underneath.
Fractional Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing helps reduce and minimize the look of pores. The treatment uses micro-zones of collagen boosting helps rejuvenate skin to a fresher and smoother look.
Treatments that use Intense Pulsed Light, help to refine the texture and the appearance of pores by tightening them.
How to Maintain Your Pores
- Have a healthy and balanced diet. Food that’s high in fat and unhealthy oils can cause inflamed skin, which can lead to clogged pores.
- Use sun protection with SPF. The harmful sun rays can make your skin less supple which will enlarge your pores.
- Inquire with your skin coach or dermatologist about regular deep cleansing facials and exfoliation that you can practice at home.
- Always ensure you wash off your make-up before you go to sleep.
