What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects over three million Canadians. This medical skin condition is typically characterized by flushing, redness, dilated vessels and acne-like protrusions commonly located in the central region of the face. Rosacea can occur in anyone but it most commonly affects middle-aged women with fair skin. Rosacea is often confused with Couperose. Couperose is defined by easily reddening and flashing skin, and is the most commonly inherited type of skin sensitivity. There are specific products to treat Couperose.
What are the Symptoms?
Rosacea symptoms can vary from one person to another and severity is unpredictable. It can be shown with redness, flushing, dilated vessels, skin irritation, a bulbous nose (enlarged red nose typically exclusively to men) or a combination of symptoms. Rosacea can be quite painful with sensitive skin because there can be a burning or stinging sensation on the problematic area. There are varying degrees of rosacea and different approaches for each level.
What are the Causes?
The cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is predicted to be a combination of both genetic and environmental factors A number of factors can trigger rosacea by increasing the blood flow to the surface of your skin. Rosacea flare can be influenced by different factors such as spicy food, skin care products, high blood pressure, and extreme weather conditions. Rosacea is not caused by a lack of hygiene.
How Can You Treat Rosacea?
Without proper treatment, rosacea can worsen and the skin can become disfigured, with more redness, bumps, and thickening of the skin. While there is no cure for rosacea, it can be managed by oral antibiotics or cosmetic treatments such as laser treatment and facials targeted for this skin disease.
