How to Choose a Hair Removal Method
October 17th, 2018
There’s nothing more annoying or embarrassing than unwanted body hair. Fortunately, you have options to permanently or temporarily get rid of unwanted hair just about anywhere on your body. But you need to choose a hair removal method that is right for you and the hair you’re trying to remove.
Laser Hair Removal vs. Electrolysis
The two best and most popular methods for permanently getting rid of hair are electrolysis and laser hair removal.
Laser hair removal uses beams of light that zero in on the pigment in the hair follicle. The heat that the laser generates helps stop hair growth. Over time, the treated hairs will fall out on their own.
Electrolysis sends a small current of electricity into the hair follicle. The electricity causes a chemical reaction that destroys the cells at the root of the follicle. The hair follicle is then removed with tweezers.
Both electrolysis and laser hair removal are approved for permanent hair reduction by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S..
- Laser Hair Removal Treatments – Because laser hair removal targets pigments in the hair follicle, it is not well suited for treating fine, light coloured hair. It can be used to treat both smaller areas, like facial hair, and larger areas, like hair on your back and legs.
- Electrolysis Hair Removal Treatments – Electrolysis can be used on any hair thickness and colour, including light-coloured facial hair. Because it targets each individual hair follicle, electrolysis is best suited for treating smaller areas like your lips, chin and eyebrows.
Waxing vs. Threading
Waxing and threading are temporary hair removal treatments. Both treatments remove the existing hair follicle without stopping the regrowth of hair. They are also both well-suited to work on any type of hair.
Waxing involves the application of soft or hard wax that adheres to hair follicles and removes them when the wax is stripped away. Threading removes hair by rolling a twisted cotton or polyester thread over the treatment area to pluck away the hair follicles.
- Waxing gives you the longest time between hair removal and regrowth. While it works well on all types of hair, it’s especially well-suited for thicker, coarser hair, including underarms, bikini lines and legs.
- Threading is best suited for shaping and/or removing lighter facial hair, including eyebrows and lips.
