If you’ve had it with the freezing temperatures and all the snow we’ve had here in Markham this winter, you might decide to get away form it all with a vacation to warmer climes down south. In addition to all your other preparations, including a new wardrobe (of course!) it’s important to remember your skincare.
The quick change from colder temperatures and little or no sun exposure to the heat and non-stop sun of the tropics can leave your skin more susceptible to damage if you don’t take precautions to protect it.
Here are just a few things you can do to care for your skin and come back from your winter vacation looking your best.
1. Use Broad-Spectrum Sunscreen
Not just for the beach, you should use sunscreen constantly while down south. Even on overcast days, or when you’re touring, the tropical sun can damage your skin when you least expect it. Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. And you should use sunscreen with a higher SPF rating than normal because your skin isn’t ready for the onslaught of sun.
2. Wear Sun-Safe Clothing
Whether you’re on the beach or sightseeing, sun-safe clothing is the best way to protect your skin. Wide-brimmed hats, long-sleeved shirts and long pants will cover as much skin as possible, while keeping you cool and comfortable.
3. Moisturize Your Skin
From the moment you step on the plane, your skin faces lots of conditions that can dry it out. Especially at night time, where the moisturizer can go to work while you sleep, it’s important to keep your skin hydrated.
4. Drink Lots of Water
Drinking water throughout the day is like moisturizing your skin from the inside out. Water’s hydration will help your skin protect itself from dry conditions, sunshine and wind exposure.
If you’re lucky enough to be able to escape the winter, protecting your skin’s health will make it a great escape!
